Don’t you think I have a pretty odd name for an Indian girl?” asks  Europa Bhowmik , pulling smoothly on the rowing machine, her arms moving in rhythm, her biceps rippling. It’s the self-unconscious question of a teenager, one who’s just completed her Plus Two and has dreams of a bright future in her eyes. But then, Europa — true to her uncommon name — is an uncommon girl. Not for her the dreams of studying medicine or engineering, completing her MBA, bagging a top job at an MNC. For this 18-year-old, her body is her temple and she worships with a lot of faith and fervour. Europa is a female bodybuilder, a rare breed in  Bengal . “I am 18 now and when I started, I was the youngest bodybuilder in the country. I think I still am,” chuckles the 4' 11" girl, who won a silver in the lightweight category at the Asian Bodybuilding and Physique  Sports Championship 2017, which took place in South Korea in August. ANKITA SINGH

While Ankita has been working out since 2008, it was 2014 which was her breakthrough year in bodybuilding. She came fifth in the Women’s Fitness Physique category at the 6 th  World Body Building & Physique Sports Championships, 2014. Soon after, Ankita was once again a top five finalist, this time at the 2015 Jerrai Classics. In 2016, she narrowly missed out on a medal after coming fourth at the Miss India Championships in Raipur. More recently, though, 27-year-old Ankita won a bronze medal at the 2017 IBBF Miss India Bikini Physique. Ankita Singh has now competed as a professional Indian female bodybuilder 13 times nationally and twice internationally. But Ankita will now be hoping to continue her progress by winning a silver or gold medal next. Ankita’s Advice:  “Never consider yourself less than anyone. Believe in your abilities as ‘YouNoLess’. Stay patient and stay consistent as every good thing takes time! Consistency is the key.

SHWETA MEHTA

After working as a software engineer in Bangalore for several years, Shweta is now a full-time bodybuilder and fitness model. Shweta shot to fame after performing a sensational stunt for her MTV Roadies Rising Warrior audition. She completed several squats with the cricketer, Harbhajan Singh, sitting on her shoulders. 28-year-old Shweta was a runner-up in the Women’s Fitness Model category in the 2015 Jerai Classic. But at the 2016 edition, Shweta won the Women’s Physique category, and also won the overall competition.

Karuna Waghmare

Her story is totally inspiring as she made it huge in spite of her family’s financial condition. 44 years old Waghmare has a number of titles to her credit for example, sixth place in the 2015 Amateur Olympia, Miss India 2015 Overall title, 2012 Miss India Fitness Physique etc. it is known that the superstar Salman Khan provided her patronage and funding for her future performance. Ashwini Waskar

Just a couple of years ago, Waskar  was a very modest women with few meek necessities. Belongs to Konkan region in Maharashtra, Waskar reached Mumbai to pursue her career as a senior researcher at the  Central Institute of Fisheries as she  finished her masters in fisheries. She joined the gym as she put on excess weight and wanted to get rid of it. Within one year, there was so much visible transformation that she became first competitive female bodybuilder in India. Even after her delivery, she did not stop and went on to become a renowned body builder in India.

Kiran Dembla

Name it and Kiran has done it all. This 41 year young woman is a trained classical singer, a mother of two sweet children and also a professional fitness trainer. Now she aims to make her mark in the World Body Bui lding Championship in Europe and then in US.She actually broke the stereotypes by venturing into the world of fitness training which normally women do not think of pursuing. 41-year-old Kiran Dembla is a certified personal fitness and aerobics trainer whose clients include Anushka Shetty and Tamanna Bhatia. The fitness professional came a respectable sixth in her bodybuilding debut in Hungary, 2013. She is now setting goals to participate in a future World Body Building Championship.
